The Victoria and Albert Museum boasts the greatest and most diverse collection of decorative art and design in the world, from 3000 BC to the present. This collection numbers a staggering 4 million objects, including national collections of sculpture, furniture, fashion and photographs. Here, you’ll also find displays of jewelry, silver, miniatures, pottery, glass, furniture, weapons, musical instruments, and costume. It also houses the National Art Library. Founded in 1852 the museum has been housed in Aston Webb's grand building since 1909. The building has an impressive facade and main entrance. As the museum grew new buildings were erected when needed. Many of these buildings were intended to be semi-permanent exhibition halls but all have survived and represent one of the finest groups of Victorian buildings in the country. The 145 galleries cover 10 acres and are spread out over four floors. At the V & A you can also fine art including the largest collection of Italian Renaissance sculpture outside Italy, enjoy the national collection of the paintings of John Constable, and see the world renowned fashion collection or marvel at the Raphael cartoons.
